complex habitats
Complex Habitats (CH) is a research lab based in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, focusing on a technological transdisciplinary approach to explore morphogenetic and emergent spatial systems through cybernetic driven ethnographic frameworks. We investigate how informal settlements, adaptive architectures, and resident-driven ecologies evolve in response to social, environmental, and infrastructural pressures. By bridging computational design, urban theory, and field-based observation, our work seeks to uncover the hidden logics and living intelligence embedded in complex habitats across the Pearl River Delta and beyond.
Johnny Wong is a PhD student at the Institute of Future Human Habitats (iFHH) at Tsinghua SIGS, where his research led to the creation of the Complex Habitats (CH) lab. His work is informed by over 20 years of professional design and construction practice in Asia, channeled through his studio, FAK3. He has previously held positions as an Adjunct Associate Professor at both the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. He holds a graduate degree from the Royal College of Art and studied at Kingston University.
